TOPEKA, KAN. – A Junction City man who was injured in a shooting incident in April has been indicted on federal firearms charges, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.

Michael Anthony Washington, 25, Junction City, Kan., is charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction and one count of unlawful possession of ammunition after a felony conviction.

In counts one and two, it is alleged that on April 6, 2012, Washington possessed a Kel-Tec brand Model Sub 2000 9 mm semi-automatic rifle and ammunition. At the time, Washington was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition because of prior felony convictions. He was convicted on a felony charge of possession of cocaine in a case filed in Geary County District Court in 2006, and on a federal charge of unlawful possession of a firearm filed in 2008 in U.S. District Court in Kansas.

On April 6, 2012, Junction City Police were called to a report of shots fired in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Washington went to the Geary Community Hospital emergency room with gunshot injuries.

The third count alleges Washington unlawfully possessed a .22 caliber pistol on July 25, 2012.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years and a fine up to $250,000. The Junction City Police Department investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Hendershot is prosecuting.

OTHER INDICTMENTS

Chris Alan Martin, 45, Salina, Kan., is charged with one count of distributing methamphetamine; one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine; one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking; and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. The crimes are alleged to have occurred in September 2012 in Saline County, Kan.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years and a fine up to $1 million on each of the methamphetamine counts; a penalty of not less than five years and not more than life and a fine up to $250,000 on the charge of unlawful possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking; and a maximum penalty of 10 years and a fine up to $250,000 on the remaining firearms charge. The Salina Police Department investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Hendershot is prosecuting.

Filberto Nunez-Garcia, 27, Salina, Kan., is charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute 2.7 kilograms (more than 5 pounds) of marijuana and one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The crimes are alleged to have occurred in September and October 2012 in Saline County, Kan.

If convicted, he faces a penalty of not less than 10 years and not more than life and a fine up to $10 million on the marijuana charge; and a penalty of not less than five years and not more than 40 years and a fine up to $5 million on the methamphetamine charge. The Salina Police Department investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Hendershot is prosecuting.

Augustin Gaona Serrano, 28, a citizen of Mexico, is charged with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a person who is not a citizen of the United States and one count of possession of methamphetamine. The crimes are alleged to have occurred Aug. 1, 2012, in Montgomery County, Kan.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years and a fine up to $250,000 on the firearms charge and a maximum penalty of a year and a fine up to $1,000 on the methamphetamine charge. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigated. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Jacobs is prosecuting.
Richard L. Wilson, 64, Abilene, Kan., is charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine; one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana; and one count of unlawful possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking. The crimes are alleged to have occurred Aug. 26, 2012, in Abilene, Kan.

If convicted, he faces a penalty of not less than 10 years and not more than life and a fine up to $4 million on the methamphetamine charge; a maximum penalty of five years and a fine up to $250,000 on the marijuana charge; and a penalty of not less than five years and not more than life and a fine up to $250,000 on the firearms charge. The Drug Enforcement Administration investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Duston Slinkard is prosecuting.

Dennis Gilliam, 53, Manhattan, Kan., is charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The crime is alleged to have occurred Aug. 26, 2012, in Riley County, Kan.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $1 million. The Drug Enforcement Administration investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Duston Slinkard is prosecuting.

In all cases, defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The indictments merely contain allegations of criminal conduct.
